This week's winter weather pattern features more than just snow and ice. A blast of Arctic air diving down from the north is ushering in the coldest temperatures of the season. How cold will it get in the days ahead? Here is everything that you need to know.

Record-Breaking Cold Pushes to the East

Forecasters are predicting the potential of record-breaking temperatures for about 235 million Americans as the start of the meteorological winter gets underway. The northern Plains and the Upper Midwest were the first parts of the U.S. to experience this bone-chilling cold on Monday. Temperatures plunged below zero degrees across portions of Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

The mass of cold air will march to the east as the week progresses, eventually reaching the Interstate 95 corridor by Friday. Several cities may see record-breaking readings for this time of the month, including Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Baltimore, and New York City. While the temperatures are not likely to rival what the northern Plains saw to start the week, the chill will certainly be in the air for the next several days.
