A large mass of cooler air is going to infiltrate the Northeast over the next week, marking a major change in the weather pattern. Here is a look at what to expect over the next several days in this corner of the country.

Surges of Cooler Will Bring Relief from the Heat to the Northeast

The northeastern U.S. is going to get a break from the warm temperatures and high humidity levels this week. How long with this cooler pattern linger? The first batch of cool air is forecast to move into the region on Monday, bringing down the mercury by as much as 15 to 20 degrees.

For example, New York City will top out in the mid 70s for a high on Monday. Morning clouds will be replaced by sunshine in the Big Apple. It will be a bit breezy with winds out of the northeast at 10 to 20 mph.

Boston will see even cooler temperatures with highs that struggle to break the 70-degree barrier to start the new work week. Clouds in the morning will begin to break apart in the afternoon hours. Winds whipping around at speeds of 10 to 20 mph will make it feel even cooler.

The cool air is part of a front that also supported the development of locally strong storms late Sunday. The moisture associated with the frontal boundary is expected to persist in the coastal areas from New Jersey and up through Massachusetts to start the day on Monday.

Monday's forecast is also calling for widespread temperatures that hover in the 60s to mid 70s across the bulk of New England, as well as portions of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. Highs will remain in the 80s on Monday along the coastline of the mid-Atlantic and most areas south of Pennsylvania. A drop in humidity levels in these regions will translate to lower real feel readings, even if the actual temperatures do not reflect this relief.

Overnight lows will also fall noticeably across the Interstate 95 corridor. The higher elevations of the interior Northeast could see overnight lows fall as low as the 30s on Monday night. Meanwhile, overnight readings will bounce around in the 50s and the 60s for the rest of the Northeast.

Areas located farther to the south will not get in on the relief from the humidity. This means that rain showers and thunderstorms will continue to be a possibility on Monday afternoon and evening.
