The Hawaiian islands cannot catch a break. The second Kona Low storm in a week is forecast to amplify the already existing threat of flash flooding and mudslides through the weekend. Here is a look at this developing weather maker and what it will mean for residents and tourists in Hawaii.

Hawaii Braces for Second Kona Storm of the Week

A new Kona storm is going to dump more rain on Hawaii on the heels of a historic rainfall event just a few days ago. Up to 50 inches of rain was unleashed across the island chain less than a week ago, triggering flooding, mudslides, and widespread damage and travel disruptions.

Heavy rainfall from a Kona Low over the Pacific during a five-day period resulted in over 12 inches (30 cm) of precipitation on the Hawaiian islands, resulting in widespread flash flooding. |NOAA

Forecasters are now warning that another developing storm will bring additional rain to the islands. A Kona Low is defined as a large zone of low pressure that typically forms to the west or northwest of Hawaii between the months of November and March. This area of low pressure is able to feed on subtropical moisture to create havoc.
