A brewing storm could put a damper on Valentine's Day this weekend for millions of people in the south-central and southeastern U.S. Here is a look at what this part of the country should prepare for as they make plans to celebrate the holiday.

Southern U.S. Braces for Springlike Rain and Storms This Weekend

A springlike storm system is setting up to dump heavy rain across much of the southern tier of the nation. While the northern flank of this system will produce snow and ice, the most significant concern will be for those on the southern edge of the storm. Flooding rainfall and the threat of severe storms will be the story for the south-central U.S., the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast.

Prior to the late-week storm, the tail end of the Alberta clipper storm racing through the Great Lakes and the Northeast will also bring a brief period of rain to the Southeast. This rain is forecast to fire up by the middle of this week, serving as an appetizer for the main event a few days later.

WPC surface map shows the storm track and boundaries that keep most of the southern tier in rain, while the northern edge flirts with snow and ice. Early in the event, a brief wintry mix is possible in parts of North Carolina and southern Virginia. (NOAA)
