Health officials are warning that tick activity is increasing rapidly across parts of the U.S. as peak season begins.

The number of people who visited emergency rooms across the country in April because of tick bites increased significantly compared with the same period last year. Here is what you need to know as the peak of tick season erupts.

Surge in Tick Bites Raises Alarm

Recently released data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that the number of tick bites requiring medical treatment increased in April compared with the same month in 2025. The CDC said that emergency room visits for tick bites came in at 105 cases in April, up from just 68 cases last April. This translates to an increase of 54%.

The surge in tick bites is a strong indicator that activity around the country is ramping up. This makes sense as residents tend to come out of hibernation in April, heading outside for camping, outdoor recreational activities, and yard work.

Most of the recent tick bite cases were reported in the Northeast, followed by the Midwest. Both of these parts of the country include hot zones for tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease. The risk of these diseases naturally increases during the warmer months of the year.
