It has been a rough few days in the friendly skies. Several different winter weather makers have moved through the central and eastern U.S. over the past week, snarling travel on the roads and in the air. The timing of the inclement conditions firing up with such ferocity over one of the busiest travel weeks of the year could not have been worse. Thousands of travelers were left stranded at airports due to the large number of flight delays and cancellations.

Sleeping can often feel elusive if stuck in an airport. Because an airport never sleeps, finding a spot to get comfortable and catch some zzz's is often quite the challenge. Here are a few tips from seasoned travelers if you want to try to rest while waiting out your next flight disruption.

Scout Out a Good Location

It may sound cliché, but location is everything. Choosing a spot to spread out and get cozy can be difficult at a busy airport. While you may be tempted to try to find the most remote spot at the airport away from the hustle and bustle, this is not always the smartest move when it comes to personal safety. Instead, consider posting up as close as possible to your departing gate. Not only is this the most convenient, but you will also be close to other travelers.

For an extra layer of safety, consider finding a spot near a security station. Weary travelers may also want to try to scope out a spot in the arrival lounges. These areas of an airport tend to have more plentiful seating, giving you more options when trying to find the best place to close your eyes.
