5 hours agoThe spirit of Halloween is in the air as temperatures drop, and kids start hunting for that perfect costume for the big night. The chill in the air may prompt many people to get a jumpstart on their pumpkin carving. How can you prolong the life of your jack-o'-lantern so that it lasts through the Halloween holiday? Here are a few tips about protecting it from the harsh weather, as well as what to spray on your carved pumpkin to keep it fresh for the next two weeks.
How the Weather Can Impact a Pumpkin's Lifespan
Different types of weather can speed up the natural rotting process of a pumpkin. Depending on the region of the country in which you live, you will be dealing with a variety of different elements. The rotting process is accelerated further once it is carved. However, you are not left at the complete mercy of Mother Nature if you want to carve up those gourds early so that you can display them on your porch.
Pumpkins displayed in humid climates are more likely to face trouble at the hands of warmer temperatures and invasive bugs. Humidity triggers the pumpkin to produce mold at a faster rate, naturally encouraging it to rot. Too much sun will also cause the pumpkin to shrivel in areas where the temperatures are still warm. This makes a shaded area on the porch the best place to display your creation once it is carved.
