The warm days of spring bring the best kind of visitors - hummingbirds! These tiny flyers zoom through neighborhoods just as the first flowers open. People get so excited when they spot that first hummingbird feeder visitor of the season. It means sunny days are finally here to stay.

Have you ever tried to count how many times a hummingbird flaps its wings? You can't! They move too fast - about 50 beats per second!

What Makes Hummingbirds Tick

Hummingbirds need tons of energy to keep those wings moving. If you had their metabolism, you'd have to eat 300 hamburgers every day just to stay alive! No wonder they're always searching for sweet flower nectar and tiny bugs to eat.

These little birds remember exactly where they found good food last year. Just like how people remember which restaurant had the tastiest pizza, hummingbirds have amazing memories for your garden. Many people who put up the same feeder years in a row, swear the same hummingbirds returns each April to claim their territory.
