Trapped in a Flooding Car? 3 Steps That Can Save Your Life
Alexis Thornton
2 hours agoFlash floods turn from inconvenient to deadly fast, and nearly half of all flood deaths happen inside a vehicle. If floodwater ever surrounds your car, knowing exactly what to do in the first few seconds matters more than anything else.
Why Cars Are So Dangerous in Floodwater
A flooded road that looks passable often isn't. Water hides dips, washed-out pavement, and drop-offs underneath the surface, so there's no way to judge the actual depth until a tire finds it the hard way.
The numbers explain why this is so deadly. Just 6 inches of moving water is enough to sweep a person off their feet, and that same 6 inches can get pulled into a car's tailpipe and stall the engine. Once water reaches 12 inches, roughly halfway up most tires, it can carry a vehicle away entirely. No car, truck, or SUV is flood-proof past that point.
