Tropical weather disturbances are moving across the Atlantic with more regularity this week, marking a dramatic change from the quiet period to start the month of September. Forecasters are now warning that two tropical storms could come to life later in the week, bringing potential impacts to the U.S. in the days ahead. Here is a look at what is currently churning in this part of the world's oceans.

Details of Invest 94L

While the rapid intensification of Hurricane Gabrielle grabbed all of the weather headlines this week, this storm is now moving out to the open seas and well away from the U.S. The potential concern now lies in two different areas of development taking aim at the Bermuda and the U.S. Atlantic coastline. The next two names up on the list for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season are Humberto and Imelda.

The first tropical wave is gaining strength as it tracks over the Leeward Islands. The latest forecast models out of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicate that this feature will continue to move to the west, reaching the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola on Wednesday. The associated bands of heavy rain and gusty squalls will persist into Thursday in this part of the basin.

The NHC has currently designated this wave as Invest 94L. After menacing the Leeward Islands, it is forecast to move into the Bahamas by the end of the work week. There is a chance that the NHC will send out a Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance aircraft mission to gather more data on this weather maker as early as Wednesday. This will be a sign that the NHC is growing more concerned that the feature will take on defined tropical characteristics.
