40 minutes agoAir travelers were met with the fury of Mother Nature over the busy Thanksgiving travel week, leading to hordes of flight delays and cancellations. While you cannot control or predict the conditions outside, knowing which U.S. airports experience the most weather-related disruptions can help you plan your travel accordingly. Here are the ten most likely airports to experience weather delays in the U.S, taking 10 years of data over the 30 largest airports into consideration.
Top Five Most Weather-Delayed Airports
Leading the list for the most disruptions at the hands of weather is San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The most common weather problems at this major West Coast hub are low clouds, fog, and wind. It does not take long for the flight delays to rack up when the marine layer is in place. Although the fog is an issue throughout the year, it is most disruptive during the winter months.
The proximity of the two sets of parallel runways at this airport means that low visibility becomes even more of a hindrance. This is because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not allow planes to land in this side-by-side configuration when visibility is low.
