There’s no better way to celebrate the freedoms Americans are offered than a gathering of family and friends. With great food, camaraderie, and a day or two away from the office, there’s a lot to look forward to.

As people are wishing each other a happy Fourth of July this weekend, it’s important not to get lost in the clinking bottles, fired-up grills, and spectacular fireworks shows. With just an ounce of precaution, there can be a lot more fun to go around.

Inspect Your Grill Before You Light It

Let’s start with the star of any July 4th celebration. Before you host a neighborhood barbecue, make sure your grill is in tip-top shape.

Give it a thorough cleaning, especially if you don’t use it regularly. All those little buildups of grease and charred food can spark small flare-ups and fires. If you use a gas grill, make sure all your connections are secure to avoid dangerous leaks or other hazards.
