Why Dogs Are Drawn to Certain People

A dog trots right past several people in a room and makes a beeline for one specific person. It happens too consistently to be random. Research into canine behavior has revealed that dogs are tuned into a surprisingly detailed set of social signals, and certain human traits reliably draw them in. If dogs always seem to find you first, there are some specific reasons why.

Dogs Read Body Language Constantly

Dogs are watching you even when you don't think they are. They pay close attention to posture, the speed and smoothness of movement, and facial expressions. People who move slowly and calmly tend to be perceived as non-threatening. Erratic gestures or fast movements can register as alarming, even if the person means no harm.

Soft, open body language sends a clear signal of safety. People who naturally hold themselves in a relaxed, non-confrontational way tend to invite approach. Dogs are also sensitive to eye contact. A hard stare is often interpreted as a challenge, while a soft gaze or averted eyes is typically more welcoming.
