Landscaping Tips to Prevent Flooding Around Your Home

Jennifer Gaeng

Yesterday

Heavy rains can turn your yard into a soggy mess that threatens your house foundation. Landscaping for flood prevention isn't about making things look pretty - it's about controlling where water goes before it causes serious damage. Smart homeowners figure out how to direct rainwater away from their homes instead of letting it pool where it shouldn't.

Yard drainage solutions work when you understand basic water behavior. Water flows downhill, period. Your job is creating paths that send it away from your house rather than toward it. Even small landscaping changes make huge differences during heavy storms.

Getting Your Slopes Right

Home flood protection starts with proper grading around your foundation. The ground needs to slope away from your house - at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet. It doesn’t sound like much, but it's enough to send water flowing away instead of pooling against your basement walls.

Slope grading techniques don't need fancy equipment for most folks. You can fix grading problems with a shovel and some elbow grease. Build up soil around your foundation using clean fill dirt, then cover with topsoil for planting. Make the slope look natural so it doesn't dump water on your neighbor's property.
