You do not have to let the winter weather keep your dog cooped up inside. With the right practices and information, you can be assured that your pup will stay safe while outside in the elements. In general, vets recommend that you avoid walking your dog when the temperatures drop below the freezing mark of 32 degrees. Here are a few tips when walking your dog outside during the winter months.

Keep Your Dog on a Leash

Keeping your dog on a leash is even more important during the winter. Dogs can mistakenly run onto a frozen body of water or into another winter hazard. Dogs are naturally curious, often using their sense of taste to explore their surroundings. You do not want your pup to inadvertently lick a chemical used to melt snow.

Because of the shorter days, it is important to choose a leash with reflectors designed to increase visibility of you and your dog. It is also a good idea to use a leash with a better grip when the temperatures drop.
