What Outdoor Activities Could be in Jeopardy This Holiday Weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is going to bring a cornucopia of weather conditions throughout the country with some areas baking in the heat and other communities dodging heavy rain and thunderstorms. What can you expect for various outdoor activities? Read on for the details.

Mostly Calm for the Western U.S.

Those with outdoor plans in the western U.S. will enjoy generally calm conditions, providing nice weather for hiking and camping. Any instances of severe storms will be rare with temperatures trending at seasonable levels. Campers will want to be aware of the risk of wildfire danger when using open flames. Arizona and New Mexico have been particularly dry over the past few months, making it important to exercise caution when building fires.

While rain and storm activity will be isolated and sporadic in nature, those in the Rocky Mountains from Montana down into Colorado will want to watch out for rain on Saturday. Temperatures will fall low enough in the highest elevations to support the development of late season snow. Looking into the other mountain ranges in the region, the Cascades, Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada are not expected to see any moisture from Saturday and through Monday.

However, rain showers could be a nuisance on Friday night for the northwestern corner of the U.S. For instance, Seattle is forecast to see occasional rain showers on Friday evening and into the early morning hours. While the rest of the weekend is calling for mostly dry conditions, temperatures will top out in the low 60s for highs due to the cloud cover.
