If the predictions are correct, we are poised to see one of the busiest Atlantic hurricane seasons of all time. Forecasters at AccuWeather have posited that there will be approximately 20 to 25 such storms this year. All of these hurricanes will need names. Because there are likely to be so many, it is believed that some new names will even make the list.
For just over 70 years now, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has been labeling tropical systems with their own names. If a hurricane causes a lot of damage and death — as in the case of Hurricane Katrina — that name will then be taken out of rotation. Although there are 26 letters in the alphabet, there are five letters that are not used to start hurricane names. Therefore, if you have a name that begins with X, Y, Z, U or Q, it will not be used to name a storm during the hurricane season that officially kicked off on June 1.
