The cold weather is here. But that does not mean that you have to give up your running routine. The right gear can make all the difference for winter-weather running. Here are a few proven tips to stay safe and comfortable when heading out for those winter runs.

Essential Gear to Add to Your Wardrobe

What you wear when running in cold weather will make all the difference in your comfort and success. Layering becomes even more important when the temperatures start to tumble. The best type of running fabric is synthetic and sweat-wicking. The outermost layer should be both waterproof and wind-resistant. Clothing that is adaptive gives you more flexibility. For example, removable arm warmers, zippers, and gloves that can go on or off will help you to achieve ideal comfort. Be sure to take any new gear out for a test run before wearing it during a race. You do not want to be halfway through a long race to discover that you are not dressed appropriately for the conditions.

When running in sub-freezing temperatures, it is imperative to protect the face, head, and other extremities. A face mask or a scarf is useful when running in extreme cold. Windy conditions paired with the cold temperatures will raise the risk of frostnip on unprotected areas. A lip balm will offer an extra layer of protection for exposed lips, while petroleum jelly can be used on other exposed body parts to prevent chapping.
